Acrylic yarns are what I use because I usually knit a lot of baby things. If mom can't wash and dry items then I don't make it. Same for other items that I make. I can't afford the really nice yarns they are too expensive I survive on Social Security.
I taught myself how to knit and crochet when I was 16 on the back steps at my home. I bought the "teach me how to knit and crochet" books and some needles and hooks and away I went. I knit and crochet all the time. I have to force myself to take a break so I can sew Angel Gowns for Babies Born Sleeping. I donate them to the area hospitals. I create them from donated gowns.
