The stitches on the even rows are done as they appear, so what you knitted on an odd row becomes a purl when you turn your work over, and what you purled on the odd row becomes a knit when you turn over. The purls have a kind of ‘collar’ round the stitch, just underneath the needle. So, exactly what you do on each even row will change depending on the pattern on the last odd row you did. I hope that is helpful!
