Hello ladies, I would like to knit this beautiful blanket for my first grandchild. I have not bought the pattern yet but it says on the description that it can be knitted in any yarn thickness as long as you use the correct needle size. I have four 100g balls of double knit yarn. Do you think this would work and would i have enough?
Hi Pauline. It is, I think, an original design, something different for a special event. As said previously, with 21 square blocks across on the bias at its maximum, it is nearly 400 stitches, which takes a long time to do one row and I found I had to concentrate! I did back a few rows when I hadn't concentrated and dropped a stitch! When you reach the decrease stage you may find the knit rows on the wrong side, but I wanted the knit rows on the right side, so follow Catherine's expert instructions down here as she helped me. Please come back if you feel I can help and keep going, it's worth it in the end. Just passed it on to my daughter, expecting first baby. Val Ps. I used the hayfield baby bonus 4 ply too. I did buy an extra ball, as I wasted some but 3 should be enough as stated. My version was not very square too but that's ok as it will be folded diagonally I would think.
Hi Valerie and Catherine - I have just bought this pattern and I am a knitter ofor 50yrs + . It looks gorgeous in print but have you both any tips for me and can I also ask what yarn you both used ?? Thank you .... Pauline xx
hi Pauline I used hayfield baby bonus 4 ply be careful not to stretch work to much it gets as its knit on the bias so I struggled to get it square when finished!!
Just thought I would log in to say I have completed the quick knit shawl. Took me about 8 weeks. Bit of a marathon but I am pleased with it. Before you commit, it could be 400 stitches if you do 21 blocks, so it takes a while to do one row. Very grateful for the advice from Catherine. Thank you. Val. Ps Love the furry fairies Catherine; you have a lot of patience!
Thanks again for replying Catherine. Yes the pattern is misleading I agree. Even on the chart it suggests the pattern is reversed. However I want the knit pattern on the right side so I shall do as you suggest. Haven't knitted for 20 years so am a bit rusty! I've dropped stitches and backed rows more than ever before. With 300+ stitches it's a marathon. Thank you very much for your help; it's been invaluable! Val
Back again having reached the 21 square blocks. Could you advise again please. From the pattern it reads that when you start to decrease you reverse the pattern. That is the knit pattern from the lace blocks were on the right side facing, but decreasing reverses this and the knit pattern is on the wrong side facing. Am I right or have I read it wrong again? I would prefer the knit pattern for all of the shawl to be on the right side facing. Maybe there is a technical reason for this or I am wrong. Apologies for asking you again.
hi Valerie agree pattern in a bit misleading think you finish pattern on row 20 meaning do row 19 then stop so the 2 rows of garter stitch would be row 20 21 then first decreasing row will be on the wrong side and the pattern is then facing the right side hope this helps good luck!!
Thank you for replying. The pattern didn't really explain properly as I thought the chart suggested that was what I had to do to reach the 40 x 40 size. So I will plough on. There must have been a lot of stitches! I am sorry I seem to have deleted your reply in the process of typing this. Your finished shawl looked lovely! Hope mine is as successful. Val j
I am making the quick knit blanket by oge, which you have completed. Using the same yarn as you, Hayfield bonus 4 ply. I have reached over half way according to the pattern but it is minute. Could you tell me if you increased the number of blocks of pattern. I have reached 9 blocks across and only used a small amount of the first ball. Did you use 3.75 needles too or larger? Sorry I am confused. Val J
no I keep knitting to the size i wanted it is 21 squares across that is the diagonal width. because its knitted on the bias struggled to get it square when it was
finished
