    About

I was given Martin Storey’s Afghan Knits for Christmas 2017 along with 3 balls of Rowan felted tweed. The Winter Trees pattern stood out for me and was a chance to learn lacework on small scale patchwork pieces. The suggested Rowan alpaca colour was unfortunately discontinued but I eventually settled on Rico’s creative melange in 006, which is a mix of cream, grey and peach, and I cut most of the peach sections out of the balls as I went along. I had never used lace patterns before but after getting used to the symbols it was just a case of counting meticulously, and making the effort to correct mistakes in order to get a good finish.

    Pattern

    Winter Trees cushion

    This pattern is from:

    Needles & Hooks

    • Single Point 4.00mm (US 6) 30cm

    Accessories

    • Tapestry Needle
    • Stitch Markers
Other : Brass beads, cushion pad

    Measurements

Notes: I used small brass beads in the design, threading them on at the start of each panel and sliding them along the yarn. The cushion comes out about 50cm square, and fits a 50cm cushion pad perfectly. The front sections stitch together easily with mattress stitch. I completed it over several weeks of activity over about 9 months - the back is really boring to knit so I only did a few rows at a time.

I love the design, this is traditional style, or if you want, it’s fresh looking, a great blend of color hue of ‘Earthly” palette. Delightful.
