Just before I retired from a 34 year teaching career I badly injured my foot. A difficult and painful surgery and recovery kept me off my foot for three months. It was a nightmare, and I desperately needed something to keep my mind off the pain and boredom of recovering from surgery. I hadn't knit since my children were babies, but this was the perfect time to start again. Socks seemed the appropriate project, but they proved too difficult at first, and so I turned to this children's hat for a teacher friend who had just had a baby. Our school mascot is the owl, so it seemed just right. Since then I have continued to knit, joined a weekly knitting group, and finally mastered socks! Knitting has given me purpose, companionship, and eased the arthritis in my hands. I vary my projects by needle size which works well. I absolutely love knitting, and credit it with getting me through a tough and lonely time.
