I have wanted to learn cables, and this was a good starter project. The pattern has an accompanying youtube tutorial by the Crochet Crowd. It's a nice, chunky, substantial hat. I turned up the edge, since the hat is quite long. If that's not your style, you can remedy that by making the cable portion 5" instead of 6" (as the pattern calls for). I finished this in one day, but my hands were aching by the end! There is a lot of front and back post crochet, which with a chunkier yarn, can take a bit of effort.
