    About

This is my own pattern. I wanted a baby sweater that could be worn indoors and would layer nicely under a jacket. My son, who is now in his forties, wore rugby shirts as a child, but I couldn't find a pattern. So I made this up. It is knit top down starting with the collar in one piece and is seamless. I made the underneath button placket in white which you sometimes see on rugby shirts. The cuffs are long enough to roll up. The bottom ribbing has side slits. Cascade 150 is labeled as sock yarn, but I think it makes wonderful baby sweaters - it's soft and machine washable. Skills required are magic loop, short rows and Russian join. I haven't published the pattern yet, because I need to work it up in more sizes.

Love the sweater! I have two young great-nephews and would like to make this for them. I hope you let us know when you publish the pattern.

Thank you, Susan. I was very pleased with how this turned out, mostly because the yarn was ideal. It's soft and smooth and just behaves itself. It may take a while before I publish the pattern - your nephews may grow up before this happens! I still have some kinks to work out so that the decreases on the collar look tidier. My only published patterns so far are for Christmas tree ornaments- these are easy since they don't have to fit anybody, don't need multiple sizes, and they don't need to be comfortable either.

I just learned that the yarn that I have been using for my rugby sweaters (Cascade Heritage 150) has been discontinued. I loved this yarn. I recently tried Louet Gems Sport, but it is not nearly as soft as the Cascade yarn. So, it's back to the drawing board. I am personally stocked up on the Cascade yarn, but I can't publish a pattern using discontinued yarn. Sigh.

Hi Susan P, I just published a rugby pattern in spite of not finding a yarn to replace the Cascade Heritage 150. The pattern is free and it's called "Ritzy Rugby". Hope this works for you.

Thank you, Alison. I had fun making it even though I had to rip a bunch of things out and start over to get it right. Cascade Heritage 150 is my new favorite yarn.
