Real Simple Watch Caps

I made this for myself (in an ongoing quest to find a comfortable hat for chilly morning strolls with my dog).

    About

I *love* this pattern! It's easy and fun. This is the eighth time I've made it. (See photos for four other examples.) Because this is a one-size-fits-all pattern, you may need to adjust the number of stitches that you cast on. This time around (no pun intended), I made the hat on double-pointed needles, even though the pattern specifies knitting a flat piece and sewing a seam. A tightly spun, chunky yarn yields a snug fit. Novelty yarn (like this aqua Debbie Bliss "Lara" boucle) yields a looser fit.

    Pattern

    Real Simple Watch Cap

    This pattern is from:
Real Simple magazine -- November 2002 (pgs 83-85) "The Handmade Hat"

    Yarns

    Needles & Hooks

    • Double Point 9.00mm (US 13) 20cm

    Accessories

    • Stitch Markers
    • Tapestry Needle

    Measurements

Notes: I cast on 52 stitches for this hat (instead of the recommended 54), because I knit this in the round, without a seam, and the k2 / p2 pattern required it. It's a one-size-fits-all pattern, (but it also includes a baby cap pattern).

Jolanta -- Here are two free patterns from Ravelry that are basically the same hat. This one is Aran weight yarn: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-fit-ribbed-hat This one is DK weight yarn: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-ribbed-hat-2

How can we get this pattern if Ravelry doesn’t access it from the magazine?

Hi Jolanta -- This pattern appeared in Real Simple Magazine in November 2002 in an article titled "The Handmade Hat." Unfortunately, I don't know how to find it online.

Is there anyway to describe the decreases?

Oh, I see! Actually, your Marya blue doesn't look like the website's Marya but no matter. It's still attractive, and your hat, too! I'm glad you were able to find your go-to hat to wear on chilly morning walks with your dog. :-)

I absolutely adore Debbie Bliss Lara - your blue hat doesn't look like Marya blue, which is more aquamarine.

You're correct that Debbie Bliss's Lara yarn in the color Marya is aquamarine. That hat is shown in a photo by itself. I included a photo of four other hats I made from The Handmade Hat pattern. The other four were made out of a variety of other purple and blue yarns -- not Lara. Sorry for the confusion!
