    About

I began knitting again last fall after stopping for 15 years, because I was teaching art classes and raising my daughter, and could not stop knitting--I was even knitting while my students were drawing, which wasn't good. Well, now my daughter is grown, and I'm no longer teaching because of arthritis and surgery on my hips and spine. I've been depressed. I started knitting again in September, and it's given me back a creative pursuit. I chose the black and white because she just bought a new black coat, and her hair is snow white. I ordered Lang Merino wool because I had just used Lang's Mille Colori for a different scarf, and I wanted it to be high quality. I think I tore it out 3 different times knowing that I could do better. I can tell she loves it from her smile in the photos--and it's given me an art form to work with again. I'm knitting nearly every day, and it makes me feel better when I knit. If I feel down, I pick up my knitting, and it's better than an antidepressant.

    Measurements

Notes: The finished scarf was 152 cms in length x 17 cms on width. I used the size 11 needles for long-tail cast on, the black stripes, which were a knit front and back stitch, then half those stitches were placed on a provisional piece of yarn, then chain-stitched with a crochet hook. The remaining stitches were changed to a size 10.75 needle, then continued knitting into the main body of the work in white, then the same black stripe, and again on the ribbing. The ribbing used a size 10 needle, and the center panel in stockinette used a 10.75. The final rows of black were knit one row with size 11 needles, then cast off on wrong side. It was much trickier to accommodate the color changes and make them look the same than to do the pattern in one color. All four black stripes were different.
