    About

I wanted to knit "February Socks." My daughter's birthday is Valentine's Day, but, ummm, the socks are for me (I knit her a sweater; hopefully, that makes me sound less selfish)! I am in love with the true afterthought heel. Do you know the one? It's the one that scares many knitters into drinking and depression (just kidding, I hope)! I am all about keeping things simple. I believe that once I got over my fear of snipping a stitch in an already completed sock and realized that lifting the live stitches onto double pointed needles where I wanted the heel to be, it wasn't scary at all. The trick is to "unravel" the snipped yarn a stitch at a time, placing each individual live stitch on one of two parallel dpns. The sock itself is basically "plain vanilla." I wanted to jazz it up a little, so I added duplicate stitch hearts, and voila - they are now my February socks. I hope to publish the pattern including the dreaded afterthought heel very soon.

    Needles & Hooks

    • Circular 2.00mm (US 0) 100cm

    Accessories

Other : I needed two progress keepers to indicate the heel placement line and a blunt needle to weave in all my loose ends and for the duplicate stitch hearts. Also, I used some stash sock yarn for the alternating stripes (sorry, I do not remember what brand it is

    Measurements

Notes: I use a plastic cut out template of my foot on which I have marked a heel line. My foot measures 7 inches to the heel line, and 2 1/4 inches from that line to the end of my heel. I try the socks (toe up) on the template. When I reach the heel line, I place a progress keeper on a center stitch. I continue to knit in the round until I am satisfied with the length including a ribbed cuff and bind off. Then I add in my afterthought heel

Goodness the heel process sounds like a nightmare but they certainly make for a joyful pair of socks and I don't blame you for claiming them for your own
