I started knitting for health reasons, as a way to lose weight and prevent myself from snacking late at night when I was in college. I'd run, do homework then knit while everyone else was munching on chips and pizza over a movie. My "freshman 15" was actually -15 thanks to knitting.
Two degrees and several zip codes later, I began knitting again when my husband bought a powerboat because there too the only things to do were drink or eat, two activities counterproductive to keeping off the 40+ pounds I had lost since I learned how to knit.
For people facing obesity issues or anxiety, this is the perfect way to get through the binge or fear; both of which one can experience in 7' seas as one's husband is attempting to outrun the weather. I have a Lopi sweater to prove this theory.
On the social front, it's a great way to meet people, particularly when you move to the suburbs where no one talks to each other unless forced to do so.I have met some terrific people over a skein!
