    About

I love to quilt and the log cabin is my favorite square. I put one on every quilt I make for my family no matter what pattern I use. For my grandson's baby blanket, I thought this would be beautiful for him. Blue Sky Alpaca cotton yarn is so beautiful to work with.

    Pattern

    Log Cabin Knitting

    This pattern is from:
from the book, Mason Dixon Knitting

    Yarns

    Needles & Hooks

    • Circular 9.00mm (US 13)

    Measurements

Notes: my blanket turned out to be about 29 x 35 ish. I added a simple crochet edge to finish it off.

@Susi W, I am still waiting for the yarn to arrive! but busy with other projects. I have a question, do you remember the initial rectangle (cast-on stitches and lines?) sorry to ask but I have never done a log cabin blanket in my life.
I have tried to find your pink blanket but cannot seem to see it. where can I check it out? many thanks and warm regards from Zurich

Hi Helene, so nice to hear from you! I looked in my notes on the log cabin blanket. It says I cast on ten stitches. I tired looking at my picture and counting from it. I'm hoping, that's what I did. I'm so sorry to not be of any help to you. I am a knitter who seriously cannot decifer written instructions in general, then I try doing what they say, and wind up doing what I think.
I know as a quilter, you can start out with whatever size first piece of fabric you want to start with. That also means, a square or a rectangle, doesn't matter. It's your choice. I have made several, I mean several log cabin quilts with fabric for years and years. As a matter of fact, I put a log cabin square on every quilt I make as my signature because I love that square so much.
For my grandson, I wanted to knit a log cabin. It took a try or two for me to figure it out. Like I said, reading the directions is far harder for me then just trying and making the mistakes until it looks right.

        Hi Helene,
The pink blanket for my granddaughter is also in my pictures of things I've put on Love's site, so far. It's called Sofeetie's blanket. It's also done in the blue skye alpaca cotton yarn. It's very light pink. It is from a leaflet pattern, not a book like corvin's was.
The leaflet is called: wool leaves lace baby blanket by Jared flood.
I hope you can find it under my name.
Can't wait to see your beautiful things you're making here on love's. It's such a nice place to share our work. Very inspirational!
I hope I've helped again. Thank you for liking my blanket again. Warm wishes to you too in this upcoming Christmas season! susi

@Susi W: Hi Susi!! you are so sweet for answering all my questions, thank you! finally found your pink blanket! it's very light that is why I kept over looking it. wow it's lovely and looks quite difficult! great idea to use that lovely cotton! I will make my log cabin (Corvin's) also with 2 colors (offwhite & yellow) like you did Sofeetie's... it takes forever for the wool to arrive! I will definitely post some pictures, I am also waiting wool for a hoodie and a toy! so excited! wish me luck! :-)
upps sorry forgot Thanksgiving, we do not celebrate it here, but know its important in the US. I wish you a lovely Holiday season! Helene

        @Helene W: hi helene,
of course! always happy to try to help another artist. i need to take better notes because i tend to make it up as i go because its so hard for me to really follow the patterns.
i wish you nothing but the best in making your little blankets. i know you can do it!! don't worry about mistakes. that's how we can learn.
look forward to pictures when you get started.
merry christmas to you and those on the other side of the world from me!
        thank you again!

hi helene and danke, i used two strands at a time, yes. most definitely. i looked in my notes and of course, didn't write how many skeins i bought. BUT, because i made the other blanket in my projects, the pink one, also with two strands at one time, i do believe i only bought 8 skeins. i tend to make things bigger then the patterns tell me to just because, and the pink blanket pattern used 640 yards, doubled. that would mean 4 skeins and thats why i bought 8 to make it bigger!
i'm sorry for not making better notes. i will jot down how many skeins to help other people interested, and me, from now on.
take a look at the other blanket in my collection. it was pretty too and from a pattern. the log cabin is from a book.
      happy knitting to you both!
p.s. the worsted cotton yarn from blue sky alpaca is wonderful!
