I'm knitting this pattern, and I have a few questions regarding this.

1st, at the top of the second column it says to begin with a purl row. Assuming that this is on a new ball of yarn because of the note in front of it, how many stitches am I supposed to cast on? All I know is that I have to knit it to 1.5 inches (I'm knitting a size medium).

2nd, right after the part I just asked about, there is a section that says joining row. I realize the joining row is supposed to join the 2 swatches together, but how exactly do I do that? The instructions just seem like normal knitting instructions?

Thanks so much! I'm fairly new to knitting so I'm still trying to figure what it is that I'm doing.

He is a sweetie and the jacket suits him. Do you find there is any static between the wool and fur when you remove the item.

Thank you. My pup has quite wiry fur so static hasn't been noticeable.

@Theresa B: if it helps I made the 'collar' a little longer so the measurement from starting to leg openings was longer. I also knitted a little longer after the back a little longer ( before you 'leave std on a spare needle').
Good luck and hope your Jack Russell enjoys his new sweater

Thank you Alison, not sure he appreciates his wardrobe! He does love all the attention he gets! I'm sure they'll be more.
