How to crochet a granny square (US terminology)

Granny squares are one of the most fundamental parts of crochet, and although they range from simple to involved, this tutorial should give you a good idea how to get started.

Step by step

  1. Make a slip knot, chain 4 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle.
  2. Chain 3, then work 2 double crochet into the circle and chain 2.
  3. Work 3 double crochet into the circle and chain 2. Repeat twice more.
  4. Slip stitch into the first chain of the beginning chain 3 and fasten off.
  5. Join a new color into the side of a chain 2 space corner from previous round with a simple knot.
  6. Chain 3 and work 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into the space then chain 1.
  7. Work 2 double crochet, 2 chains, 3 double crochet into the next space, and chain one and repeat twice more.
  8. Slip stitch into the first chain of the beginning chain 3 to join and fasten off.
  9. Join a new color into a side chain space with a knot.
  10. Work 3 double crochet, 2 chains and 3 double crochet into the corner chain space, chain 1.
  11. Work 3 double crochet, chain 1 into the next chain space.
  12. Work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into the corner and chain 1. Repeat the side and corner stitches twice more.
  13. Slip stitch into the top chain of the beginning chain 3 to join and fasten off.
  14. Join a new color into a side chain space with a knot.
  15. Chain 3 and work 2 double crochet into the chain space, chain 1.
  16. Work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet, into the next corner chain space, chain 1.
  17. Work 3 double crochet into the next side chain space, ch1 and repeat into the following side chain space.
  18. Work 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet into the corner chain space and ch1. Repeat the side and corner pattern until you reach the beginning chain 3.
  19. Slip stitch into the top chain, of the beginning chain 3 and fasten off. Sew in ends!
