    About

    As the weather was too hot to be crocheting my one piece blanket project I thought I do this shawl instead. I love this fine weight mainly cotton yarn. It has super colour changes and a great drape for shawls. 1 ball does a good size shawl

      This is beautiful. I've recently discovered the Scheepjes Whirl cakes and couldn't resist them. I'm looking forward to them arriving.

      What's it like to work with? How big is your shawl? I've found a gorgeous baby shawl pattern and I'm trying to work out if I need more than one cake.

      Thank you.

      Maggie.

        Hi Maggie,
        The shawl is 60 ins at its widest and 30 ins from the top to the point. I have done 3 shawls now in this yarn from 2 different patterns and all have come up the same size! In all cases I've worked them to where I have only a few inches of yarn left over. I guess for a baby shawl you would need at least 2 cakes.

        @Tracy B: Hi Tracy,
        In anticipation of that very thing, I've ordered 2 cakes of each colour that I liked. I've had to get them from different merchants in the UK and I was pleasantly suprised I found merchants here too. I've several patterns I'm looking deciding which one too do.
        What was the yarn like to work with & what size hook did you use?

        @Maggie S: Hi Maggie
        I used a 3mm hook each time which is about right for my tension with a 4 ply yarn. I don't usually have an issue with gauge unless it is a Sirdar yarn. The yarn is really nice to work with, very smooth, reasonably soft given the high cotton content and as a result I find I can crochet very fast with it. Each shawl has only taken a few evenings to complete. The only thing to watch for is where the colour threads change. These seem to be hand knotted and I found I needed to slightly trim the edges either side so that the join doesn't show. There are quite a lot of these as the colour change is achieved a strand of yarn at a time which means you don't get those hard lines of colour change you get with a lot of variegated yarns. One of those little thread snips is a must

        @Tracy B: Hi Tracy. The yarn arrived yesterday and I couldn't help myself and I just had to try it. I'm using a 3.25mm hook. It's going well. I've gone a little past the first colour change and I love how it's changing smoothly, no hard lines. You were right about needing the thread snips. Thank you so much for the info. Much appreciated.
