Wow! Impressive! I tried to fudge a sampler blanket a few years ago, when I first started crocheting, and it was so out of whack it wasn't even funny. Like rows INCHES longer or shorter. Now that I have a few years under my belt, you have inspired me to try again!
I find that with all of the off-the-cuff projects that I do, being a compulsive stitch counter really helps! I'm counting constantly, especially when going back and forth between different kinds of stitches. I hope you pick up your yarn and start again!!
So even when the stitch count would change for each time I'd change stitches, I'd just fudge it a little. And I put in some rows of squares to break things up a bit. I used Stylecraft Special DK yarn; they have the brightest yarns for this sort of thing.
