I made this for African-American breastfeeding families, and a better future for us all

    About

I started knitting pussyhats for my own mental health in the very dark aftermath of the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Soon, though, I started knitting hats for people who donated to a nonprofit organization in nearby Charlotte, North Carolina, USA that serves African-American breastfeeding families.

I ended up raising more than US$2000 and knitting almost 90 hats over a period of ~5 months (still ongoing).

Breastfeeding is a fundamentally healthy and life-affirming practice that is too often sabotaged by cultural barriers and corporate interests. African-American mothers in particular face extra challenges when they breastfeed. These families and those who serve them are living at the intersection of the racism, misogyny, and cruelty that Trump exploited to get elected.

Most of the hats I've knitted have been worn at protest events. This project has contributed to health in many ways: my own, our democracy's, and some of our most vulnerable mothers and babies.

    Pattern

    Moderate Pussyhat

This pattern can be found here:

    Measurements

Notes: I made a range of sizes -- mostly adult, and several childens/infants.

I also used the original pussyhat pattern from www.pussyhatproject.org, but found that the moderate pussyhat pattern was faster and fit better.

One of the really fun parts of this project was experimenting with lots of different colors, types, and weights of yarn and different ways of constructing essentially the same thing -- a hat with two top corners.
