    About

Having knitted myself a pair in Wood Pigeon, decided to complement them by making my husband his own pair in Mallard.
Used Bamboo DPN's 5" in length. I find these are just the right length for sock knitting and hold the stitches well. This is a good pattern if new to sock knitting as simple, straightforward mostly all plain knitting. Great yarn washes well on wool cycle. Nice cosy socks.

Ah Jean just had to wade through all my favourited items to find you! Have made some magic loop socks. I am just trying the dpns you recommended and they are lovely so light. Thanks for the tip! First pair in Goldfinch second in Kingfisher another big thanks for introducing me to WYS!

Hi Vix, i have been wondering how you got on. Really pleased you made your socks, they look perfect. Will be interested to hear what your comments and preferred method is once you have made your pair using DPN's. I did purchase and have knitted part of a sock with a short circular, reverting back to DPN's from heel shaping on wards. The one i purchased was quite short 23cm and although bamboo, points very sharp resulting in a sore finger at times. I did find this method a bit fiddly, as someone put it in a review, like trying to write with a very small pencil. Could be I have just not had enough practice, or my needle actually too short. i will see how i get on with sock number two.

@Jean F: I have never used dpns before, well I tried once! I think the 30cm circular was good as you don't have to change needles at all. I am doing ok with the toothpicks, they are good for the arthritic fingers for sure. I am hoping as the sock gets longer it will be a bit easier and as I get more used to it. 👍

@Vix: Yes the first few rows are a bit fiddly, then should get easier. I find I also hold the needles differently, holding the right hand needle from underneath between thumb and for finger (the way my Mother used to hold her needles). So its worth trying different approaches. Look forward to hearing how you get on and I will practice a bit more with my circular. Though it may be awkward because it is just that bit too short. I have being having a bit of a break from sock knitting, distracted by other projects, however you have inspired me to go back and finish my sock.

@Jean F: I did a k1p1 rib on the kingfisher sock on two needles as I didn't like the way it looked in the round saying that the K2P2 rib looks ok in the round.
Winwick Mum uses a 30cm short circular. I knitted Goldfinch on 60cm.
The next pair I will try another pattern but felt I needed guidance for first pair. I want to get Pheasant next. Great to hear from you.

Sounds like you have your work cut out, three pairs to make . Although sock knitting can became quite addictive. I love seeing how the different colour schemes knit up. Looking forward to seeing your completed socks . 😊

@Jean F: not as much as I am! I love using multi yarns for that reason, but they have to match!

@Vix: Yes, For me also they have to match. I make note of exactly where in the colour variant I start the cast on, the first row of working the heel and the toe shaping. Can’t always get it exact though, but not too noticeable I hope.

@Jean Hi Vix, I hadn’t realised you could get really short circular needles for sock knitting (Didn’t really fancy magic loop all that pulling the needle through) Circulars are my preferred needles for hats etc. So really think I am going to have to try this ‘new to me’ method for my next pair. Let me know how you get on. F:

@Jean F: I tried magic loop with an 80cm circular but found it too long so I bought a 60cm which is much better ( these will be very expensive socks!). I am now copying Winwick Mum and bought a 30cm circular even better! Thanks so much for your encouragement
