    About

Inspired by my recent trip to Sweden, this useful vest is named after the wonderful botanist Carl Linnaeus. Warm and feminine with a lovely drape, the garment works well as a stand alone vest or as an extra layer over a blouse or long sleeved tee. The yarn is amazingly lovely to work with, showing up stitch detail well and allowing the shaping decreases to drape elegantly. The pattern is worked flat in two pieces and then seamed at both shoulders before working a clever moss stitch neckband in the round. The sturdy buttonholes are designed to hold the button in place to avoid any nuisance escapes!
This is such a pleasure to wear and always gets lots of good comments when I wear it!

Hello Sally, how lovely to hear from you!
I think that Rowan Hemp Tweed has now been discontinued, but any aran or worstead weight yarn will work for this pattern - just check your tension before you begin!
I have seen the tunic knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester Aran and also Cascade yarns 220, both of which looked really lovely. I hope that this helps as a starting point.
        With kind regards, Stella

Hi Stella. Is this pattern knitted flat and seamed?

Yes, it is knitted flat and then the shoulder seams are sewn (although you could join them with a three needle cast-off if you prefer). There are no side seams, the buttons hold the front and the back pieces together.

It looks like the Rowan Hemp tweed is no longer sold? I was looking at Lion Brand Heartland, 24/7 cotton or Patons worsted Classic wool. Do you think any of these options would work?

I haven't knitted with any of those yarns, Elizabeth, but I've looked at the yardage & tension descriptions and they all look suitable, although it is important to knit a sample first to make sure that you are using the correct sized needle

@Stella Ackroyd: thank you. I wasnā€™t sure if an acrylic or cotton wool was suitable. Perhaps Iā€™ll knit a sample to get an idea of the material

Yes, that will be perfect! Just do a tension square to check your needle size before you commit

Thanks, Ellen, I know what you mean about choosing a colour - there are lots of nice shades in the range! I think denim would be a very useful all year-rounder too. Stella

Hi Stella, I've bought the pattern, just trying to decide what colour to do it in! I'm in the outback of Norfolk, near the coast, and an extra layer is always useful. Thanks for the pattern, can't wait to start.

That's lovely, Jenny, thanks for the comment! I live in the Northumbrian outback and find Granite very handy, but think that Denim would be equally useful and Pumice would be very elegant. Argh! Who knows?! There's never enough time, is there?!

It certainly is, Jenny, it's been perfect through the Spring and I can see it being a staple throughout the whole year. I'm very pleased with it!
