This is an amazing pattern and one that changed my (knitting) life! If you’ve never tried Judy’s magic cast on or the magic loop method then I would urge you to have a go because, amazingly, they’re not that hard! The trickiest bit is probably the crotch but, as you’d expect from Heidi, she’s provided meticulous instructions, making it very difficult to get lost.
I originally used plastic eyes but they were a tiny bit too big and made Elsie look like she’d just been probed by aliens. So, instead, I made two eyes out of some black aran wool that I had lying around. I used the trusty old technique (which I picked up from Jean Greenhowe, I think) of making a knot but wrapping the wool around several times before pulling it tight. I did a 10-wrap knot for each eye and that looked much more natural.
Finally, I added some pom-poms to the shoes to turn them into an impossibly cute pair of slippers!
